Dungeon Crawler Carl: The Best LitRPG Series You’re Not Reading (But Should Be)

I’ve read a lot of books, but few have grabbed me the way Dungeon Crawler Carl has. Four books into the series, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read. If you’re a fan of LitRPG, dark humor, and pulse-pounding action, this series is a must-read.

Oh, the best part is that all of the titles in the series are part of Kindle Unlimited. So, if you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read all seven of these books with your plan. Here's a link to the entire Dungeon Crawler Car series on Amazon.

What Is Dungeon Crawler Carl About?

Written by Matt Dinniman, Dungeon Crawler Carl takes a unique approach to the LitRPG (Literary Role-Playing Game) genre. Instead of the typical VR or Isekai setting (a Japanese subgenre of fiction where a character is transported to a new world), this series begins with the near-total destruction of Earth. An alien-controlled dungeon descends upon the planet, wiping out most of humanity. The survivors are forced into a twisted, ever-changing game show where they must fight, strategize, and entertain an alien audience to stay alive.

Our protagonist, Carl, isn’t some overpowered hero or trained warrior. He’s just a guy—well, a guy with an exceptional ability to adapt and a deep well of sarcasm. Alongside his fiercely intelligent and absolutely hilarious cat, Princess Donut, Carl battles through dungeon floors filled with monsters, death traps, and an audience that demands bloodshed.

Why Dungeon Crawler Carl Stands Out

  1. The Humor – This series is laugh-out-loud funny, with Carl’s dry wit and Donut’s diva antics providing constant entertainment. The interactions between Carl and Donut alone make this worth reading.

  2. Brutal Action – The dungeon is relentless. Every floor presents new horrors, from sadistic AI-controlled bosses to political conspiracies unfolding within the dungeon itself.

  3. Incredible World-Building – The game mechanics are detailed and well-integrated, but the real magic is in how the world evolves. The dungeon is more than just a battleground; it’s a living, breathing nightmare with rules and a history that Carl is determined to uncover.

  4. The Mystery – Why was Earth chosen? Who is really in control of the dungeon? What’s waiting at the top? The deeper Carl gets, the more the layers of the mystery unravel, and it’s impossible to stop reading.

The Books (So Far)

  1. Book 1: Dungeon Crawler Carl – Carl and Donut enter the dungeon, figuring out how the twisted game works while fighting to survive the first few floors.

  2. Book 2: Carl’s Doomsday Scenario – The challenges ramp up, the conspiracies deepen, and Carl begins to understand that this isn’t just a fight for survival—it’s a fight for answers.

  3. Book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook – The stakes get higher, alliances form and crumble, and Carl learns more about the dungeon’s sinister origins.

  4. Book 4: The Gate of the Feral Gods – The chaos continues, and Carl’s journey takes an even darker and more intense turn.

There are seven books in total, with more planned, and I can’t wait to finish the rest.

What's Next in the Series?

Book 5: The Butcher's Masquerade – Carl and Donut enter a jungle filled with savage dinosaurs and a vengeful fallen princess. The sixth floor, The Hunting Grounds, introduces a new threat: outside tourists can now join the game, making Carl and Donut the prey.

Book 6 : The Eye of the Bedlam Bride - On the eighth floor, Carl and Donut face forgotten gods and a failing AI system. Tasked with capturing six monsters for a high-stakes battle, they must subdue Shi Maria, the Bedlam Bride—whose attack drives victims insane.

Book 7: This Inevitable Ruin - The ninth floor is a warzone where nine alien-led armies battle to control a castle. With permanent deaths on the table, Carl and Donut must outmaneuver shifting alliances and betrayals to survive.

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t picked up Dungeon Crawler Carl yet, you’re missing out. It’s one of the most well-crafted, engaging, and downright fun series I’ve ever read. Whether you’re new to LitRPG or a longtime fan, this series has everything—action, humor, mystery, and a talking cat who might just steal the show.
