We’ve been living in the south (first Texas now Oklahoma) for a few years now and I am 100% turning into a southerner. We both are. It’s pretty amazing actually just how fast it’s happening.
Weather
When we moved down south we new that it got hot but we did not expect nor were prepared for most of the summer being over 100 degrees. Man, it gets hot. The dog loves it.
We’ve been in Oklahoma for a little over two years and have already had more tornado warnings than we had back home in our entire lives. But, it’s amazing what exposure does to you. I love tornado season. Yes, it’s awful when tornadoes land in populated areas and cause damage but it’s also really interesting to watch everything on TV as it happens. It’s really very educataional.
I still stand by the fact that I’d rather deal with the heat and tornadoes than shovel snow.
The Language
Y’all let me tell ya. I’ve said y’all more times than I can count since moving here and it’s just another word. And, yes, it has an apostrophe. 😁
Guns
We left Wisconsin with 1 gun three years ago. Now we have 7. Two rifles and five pistols. Guns are a big part or southern living. At least out here where we are surrounded by farms and ranches.
It’s become a really fun hobby for us. And as an added bonus it’s something that we can both do together seeing I can’t run anymore.
I’m really excited about my new rifle and will probably be posting some new ‘how-tos’ and do’s and don’ts on the shooting page soon. One of my new favorite phrases that I heard recently at the shooting range, “education not legislation”.
Food
Two words: fried onion burger. Ok that was three words but I’ve never had a burger as good as a Tucker’s fried onion burger. Period. Best burger I’ve ever had.
It’s an Oklahoma staple for a reason.
The Bugs!!
There are more insects here than I ever thought possible. Scorpions? Yep. Tarantulas? You bet. Black Widow? Oh yeah. Mole Cricket? Uh huh (that was a new one).
Thankfully I’ve only really seen one tarantula crawling through the back yard but we’ve seen a few scorpions now and so many damn crickets.
I was used to centipedes and silverfish back home but this place is a whole different animal.
Although, again, it’s amazing what you get used to with exposure.
The Heat Isn’t Great For MS
One thing that I learned rather quickly was that the constant 100 degree heat in the summer isn’t great for my MS. My leg wears out faster and my body gets wiped out much faster in the summer here when it’s close to over 100 degrees for most of the summer.
When it’s that hot, over 90 degrees, it’s advised that I don’t wear the Neural Sleeve. So when I’m out mowing the lawn or out and about, I walk without it. The Ampyra does seem to help, I’ve been able to walk without my cane for much, much longer than I did before. MS is fun and always an adventure.
But you know what I don’t ever have to do? Shovel. I will gladly deal with the heat and some slight inconveniences with my MS if it means I never have to deal with snow.
Next Up, Cowboy Hat?
Every day I feel like I’m getting more and more southern. What’s next? A cowboy hat? Cowboy boots? Who knows, only time will tell.
